Oliverio plans to run for 2012 House seat

Mike Oliverio says he wants a rematch in West Virginia's 1stCongressional District.

Oliverio announced Tuesday that he plans to run for the U.S.House seat in 2012.

Republican Rep. David McKinley won their 2010 contest, but byless than 1 percent of the vote.

Oliverio had defeated longtime incumbent Rep. Alan Mollohan inthat year's Democratic primary.

A McKinley spokesman criticized Oliverio as a career politician.Oliverio was a state senator when he ran for Congress in 2010.Oliverio served 18 years in the Legislature.

McKinley had been a legislator for 14 years in the 1980s and1990s.

The official 2012 candidate filing period does not start untilJan. 9. Anyone running for Congress must also pay a $1,740 fee.

Police chief charged with domestic battery

PADEN CITY - Paden City Police Chief Michael Billiter facesdomestic battery charges stemming from an incident at his in-laws'home.

Tyler County Sheriff Earl Kendle Jr. tells media outlets thatdeputies arrested Billiter early Monday.

Kendle says Billiter's wife and her mother and father are thealleged victims. No one was seriously injured.

Billiter remains free on a personal recognizance bond.

Paden City Mayor William Fox declined to comment.

Father of comatose student sues 6 men

WILMINGTON, Del. - A West Virginia college student who wasattacked and beaten remains in an 'eyes-open coma' nearly two yearsafter a fight that caused his injuries, and his father recentlyfiled a lawsuit over the incident.

The News Journal of Wilmington, Del., reports that the father of21-year-old Ryan Diviney filed the lawsuit in West Virginia againstsix Delaware residents who Diviney's attorneys claim were involvedin the assault on Ryan and another student.

Two of them were convicted on criminal charges last year.

Diviney's attorney, Alex Shook, said Ryan's ongoing care isexpensive, and his family has suffered the emotional cost of losingtheir son as they knew him.

The 2009 fight started over a disparaging comment about thePhiladelphia Phillies.

Record heat means more free lemonade

BLUEFIELD - Another round of record heat in Bluefield meantanother day of free lemonade.

The National Weather Service says the temperature hit 91 degreesin 'Nature's Air-Conditioned City' on both Friday and Saturday,breaking records set in 2010.

The Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce was to serve freelemonade in Bluefield and neighboring Bluefield, Va., on Tuesday.

Tuesday marked the 11th free lemonade day this year.

But it's not a record for the chamber's 70 years-plus traditionof serving free lemonade after the thermometer hits 90 degrees.There were 18 free lemonade days in 2007.

Insect zoo opening planned for Halloween

MORGANTOWN - A new zoo is opening in Morgantown next month but itwon't have the typical array of furry animals.

This zoo at West Virginia University is dedicated to a differenttype of critters - the kind that crawl, buzz and fly.

Assistant professor Yong-Lak Park tells The Dominion Post thatWVU will open an insect zoo in the Agricultural Sciences Building onHalloween.

About 35 insects will be on display, including the Southern BlackWidow spider, Chinese Mantis, Death Head cockroach and the Emperorscorpion.

Park says students across West Virginia can come to the zoo andlearn about insects. They'll even be able to touch a few.

Hospital offers class on humor in healing

WHEELING - Humor has a role in human healing, and WheelingHospital is offering a class on the concept.

A continuing education class for doctors, nurses, social workersand others is set for Sept. 17 in the hospital's auditorium.Participants can earn up to four hours of credit for the course,called 'The Ethical Use of Humor.'

The one-day seminar costs $20. It's sponsored by the hospital'sCommittee on Ethics and by the Health Plan of the Upper Ohio Valley.

Topics will include the evolution and history of humor, the roleand ethics of humor in medicine, and the appropriate use of humorwith children.

Carbon monoxide suspected in death

WESTOVER - Carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected in the death ofa Westover man and the sickening of five other people.

Westover Police Lt. A.A. Livengood said police went to the 25-year-old man's home early Monday after his wife called for help.

Livengood says the wife was 'acting funny' when police arrived atthe duplex where the couple lived. Both were taken to Ruby MemorialHospital. Two other adults and two children who lived in the duplexhad gone to the hospital about 30 minutes earlier after they becamesick.

The man was pronounced dead. Livengood didn't know the conditionsof the others.

The victims' names haven't been released.
